What is 4v4 Soccer
4v4 soccer is a fast-paced, small-sided format played with four players per team and no goalkeeper. That setup means more touches on the ball and quicker decision making for every player on the field. It's a format widely used in youth development because it keeps games moving and genuinely fun to play. The smaller field and team size also make it approachable for newer or younger players without losing the competitive edge. It's a great entry point into organized soccer, or a lower-commitment option for adults looking to get back on the field.
-
Four outfield players per team, with no dedicated goalkeeper. The field is small, typically scaled to fit within a penalty box area. Rosters are generally capped around 8 players, so everyone gets real time on the smaller field.
-
The Diamond (1-2-1): one defender, two wide midfielders, one forward, built for passing triangles and balanced spacing.
The Square (2-2): two defenders and two attackers, offering solid defensive stability. -
No offside rule, keeping the game fluid and open. Restarts after the ball goes out of bounds are typically a kick-in, dribble-in, or pass-in rather than a throw-in. Deliberate heading is restricted for younger age brackets.
-
Games are played in two 20-minute halves, with unlimited rolling substitutions allowed at any stoppage.
-
4v4 works well for younger youth players and beginners, since the small field and simplified rules make it an easy entry point into organized soccer. It's just as suited to adults looking for a lower-commitment, more relaxed format with plenty of touches on the ball. Both groups play in the same fast-paced, small-sided style.
